Rudolf Maister Grammar and Secondary School Kamnik
Formerly a school centre, our school welcomed its first grammar school students in 1949, which was of crucial importance for the future development of the Municipality of Kamnik. In 1970, the school was named after General Rudolf Maister, which also marks the beginning of educational programmes of economics. In 1996 the school was restructured into School Centre of Rudolf Maister, which had two separate organisation units: Grammar School and Secondary School of Economics. In 2010, the programme of Pre-school Education programme was implemented. It was the year 2012, when the three educational programmes were united becoming a part of one organisation unit called Rudolf Maister Grammar and Secondary School Kamnik.
The school is located in central Slovenia, 20km from the Slovene capital city Ljubljana. Since the school offers three separate educational programmes, there are more than 800 students who attend it. There are approximately 70 teachers whose main goal is to prepare the students for Matura and Vocational Matura Exams. Our school also offers part-time education, with 250 adults taking part in programmes such as Grammar School, Secondary School of Economics, Economics clerk, Pre-School Education and Matura Courses. Additionally we offer Italian, German, English and Computer courses.
Our classrooms are equipped with modern technology, which offers ideal working and learning conditions. What is more, our facilities are easily accessible to people on wheelchairs since our school has ramps instead of staircases. The Grammar School is oriented towards the equal development of natural science, sociology, linguistics and sports activities. In recent years our students have been awarded the highest of places at the international Maths, Chemistry and Philosophy Olympics. The main goal of the Grammar School programme is to prepare the students to enter the university. Since one of the conditions for enrolment is passing the Matura Exams, it undoubtedly deserves special attention.
The professional programmes of Economics clerk and Pre-school Education are based on technical modules, where theoretical and practical knowledge are intertwined.
Classes today are student oriented, focused on learning processes and professional competences of students. The main goal is to develop students’ independence and teach them to take responsibility for their actions while being responsible when it comes to work and the surrounding environment. The above factors change the role of the teacher from being a lecturer to being a mentor. The student-teacher cooperation is divided into complex modules integrating theory, practice and necessary qualifications. It requires experiential and problem-based learning while it develops new methods of assessment and evaluation. Therefore, we develop key social skills, learning and communication competences.
All students and teachers are qualified to use e-Classrooms. Foreign language lessons are diversified with the presence of native speakers, who educate students about other cultures, customs and traditions. There are also several field trips organised every year, where students are given the opportunity to get to know other towns and places both, in Slovenia and Europe. Students also participate in several extra-curricular activities, such as MEPI (The Duke of Edinburgh's Award), The CISCO Networking Academy, Junior Achievement - My Company, UNICEF, MEP (European Student Parliament), ECO School, Kamnik Medieval Days, School Choir, Astronomy class, international projects, national competitions in general subjects or professional modules, sports competitions, etc.
